NIGMATV – Live Sport, Every League and Fight Night, in 4K

Apple TV, iPhone and iPad, and What Apple Will Not Allow

Apple permits no sideloading, so the field is smaller and everything comes from the App Store. IPTV Smarters Player is free on iOS and tvOS. iPlayTV and GSE Smart IPTV are paid and better presented. TiViMate has no Apple version and never has, so the similarly named listings are unrelated products trading on the confusion. The narrower choice is not all bad: what does exist is stable and updates properly, which counts for something on a Sunday afternoon.

Before you start

  • An Apple TV 4K or HD, or any iPhone or iPad on iOS 14 or newer
  • An Apple ID
  • Your NIGMATV login details

Doing it, one step at a time

  1. Open the App Store

On an Apple TV it sits on the home screen. On an iPhone or iPad it is the usual App Store icon.

    Get login details first

  2. Install a player

Search IPTV Smarters Player, iPlayTV or GSE Smart IPTV and install one. Smarters costs nothing; the others carry a one-time price. Skip anything named TiviMato or Tivimax, which are not TiViMate and are hoping you will not look closely.

  3. Add your login

Open the app, choose the Xtream Codes option, and enter the username, password and server address. On an iPhone you can paste each field straight out of the WhatsApp conversation, which removes the commonest cause of a failed first login by removing the typing.

  4. Turn off Match Content if sport looks wrong

Under Settings, Video and Audio, Match Content is meant to switch frame rate to suit the source. On live broadcast feeds it sometimes locks to the wrong rate and produces visible judder on panning shots. Switch it off, watch a half, and switch it back only if you preferred it.

  5. Use AirPlay if it suits the room

From an iPhone you can AirPlay a fixture to an Apple TV or any AirPlay-capable television nearby. That is a reasonable answer when you would rather install nothing on the set, though it does tie up the phone for the duration.

  6. Decide which device is really the television

An Apple TV is the better answer if this is the main screen, because the app stays installed and the remote suits it. AirPlay from a phone is the better answer if you would rather leave the set untouched, at the cost of tying up the phone for ninety minutes.

  7. Sort favourites on the phone, watch on the television

Editing a favourites list with an Apple TV remote is slow. Do it in the iPhone app instead, where the list is a normal scrolling interface, and it syncs to the account rather than the device.

  8. Set the Apple TV up before the coverage

Open the player during the build-up so the guide refreshes and the buffer fills. If you are AirPlaying from a phone, start that early too, and plug the phone in: an hour and a half of mirroring will empty a battery and the stream stops with it.

When it goes wrong, and why

The channel list loads but nothing plays

Some channels use codecs Apple devices decode only with the right engine selected. Switch the player engine to VLC or FFmpeg in the app settings. This is a setting rather than a fault and it fixes the great majority of these reports.

AirPlay keeps dropping during a match

AirPlay re-encodes and re-transmits over Wi-Fi, so it is far more fragile than playing directly on the Apple TV. Put both devices on 5 GHz, stop the phone sleeping, and treat AirPlay as a stopgap rather than how you watch anything you care about.

The app is missing from my App Store

App availability follows the country of your Apple ID rather than where you are. If a player you had before has gone, sign back into the original account to redownload it, or take one of the alternatives listed above.

The picture drops to a lower quality mid-match

The player is stepping down because the connection dipped, which is the system working rather than failing. If it happens every week at the same time, the problem is local congestion; a cable to the Apple TV solves more of this than any setting in the app.

It broke mid-match: what to try, in order

Re-enter the channel first. Then switch the player engine between the built-in one, VLC and FFmpeg in the app settings, which on Apple hardware resolves more mid-stream failures than any other single change. Then take the HD copy of the channel. Then force-quit the app by double-pressing the TV button and swiping up, and reopen it. If you are AirPlaying rather than running the app on the Apple TV, stop there and switch to the app: mirroring fails under load long before a direct stream does.

Questions about Apple TV and iPhone

Is IPTV Smarters really on Apple TV?

Yes, on the tvOS App Store, and it is free. It supports the Xtream login with the guide, catch-up and on-demand sections working. TiViMate genuinely is not available on Apple TV, whatever the similarly named listings suggest.

Which paid player is worth it?

iPlayTV is where most people settle: a proper grid guide, sensible favourites, and a one-off price rather than a subscription. GSE is more configurable and less friendly. Start with the free Smarters and pay only once you know what irritates you.

Can I watch on a Mac?

Three ways: IPTV Smarters Player from the Mac App Store, the M3U link opened in VLC or IINA, or the browser player. The Windows and Mac guide covers each, and none takes longer than five minutes.

Is the Apple TV good for sport?

Very, once it is running. The hardware is quick and the picture handling is excellent. What it lacks is multi-view, so if watching two fixtures at once matters to you, an Android box alongside it is the only answer.

Why is there no proper multi-view on Apple?

Because no developer has built one for tvOS, and Apple's own picture-in-picture does not extend to third-party IPTV players in a way that helps. That is the single real gap on this platform for sport, and it has no workaround worth the name: AirPlaying a second fixture from a phone onto the same screen does not work, and two devices means two televisions. If watching two matches simultaneously is something you do most weekends, an Android box running TiViMate Premium alongside the Apple TV is the honest answer, and the two coexist happily on different HDMI ports. It is an inelegant answer and it is the only one that actually works, so it is better said plainly than dressed up as a limitation you should not mind.
